In the memory of Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar on his death anniversary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has remembered Babasaheb and paid his obeisance to the great leader.

Taking to X, the prime minister said, “Pujya Baba Saheb, along with being the architect of the Indian Constitution, was an immortal champion of social harmony, who dedicated his life to the welfare of the exploited and the deprived. My respectful obeisances to him today on his Mahaparinirvana day.”

December 6 marks Mahaparinirvan Diwas commemorating the death of the late Dr BR Ambedkar in 1956, the chief architect of India’s constitution and towering symbol of inspiration for marginalised communities.

Who was Dr BR Ambedkar?

Ambedkar, born on April 14, 1891, remains one of India’s seminal nation-builders, earning doctorates from esteemed global universities while leading India’s freedom movement alongside M.K Gandhi with his emphasis on annihilating caste oppression and securing dignity for untouchables.

His mass satyagraha movement to access public water tanks signified rousing Dalits against exclusion while the pivotal Poona Pact with Hindu leaders increased reserved legislature seats to uplift representation.

As independent India's first law minister, Ambedkar chaired the drafting committee conceptualizing its progressive, rights-based constitution aiming to foster new foundations upholding equality.

He was posthumously conferred the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour in 1990 underscoring his imprint on the republic’s democratic conscience and for spearheading emancipation of marginalized sections.
