New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Monday the creation of five new districts in Ladakh, increasing the total number to seven. The decision was met with widespread support from local communities who have been advocating for this change for years. The new districts are Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Shah stated that the creation of these districts aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a developed and prosperous Ladakh. “The new districts will enhance governance and bring services closer to people in every corner of Ladakh,” he said. This move is seen as a significant step toward addressing the long-standing demands of the region's residents.

Situation despite the circumstance

Despite this development, the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) remain firm in their pursuit of statehood and the extension of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. They emphasized that their peaceful struggle will continue until these demands are met.

Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, a prominent voice in the region, expressed gratitude towards the central government, noting that the decision honors the promises made by the BJP. However, he stressed the importance of ensuring these new districts are democratic units with autonomous councils, similar to those in Leh and Kargil.

The LAB and KDA, which have been leading protests for greater autonomy and protections, announced that they will continue their planned foot march from Leh to Delhi starting September 1. Leaders from both groups reiterated that while the creation of new districts is a positive development, it does not fully address their primary demands.
