New Delhi: Sandip Ghosh, the former head of Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital, has been thoroughly questioned by the CBI in connection with the recent rape and murder of a junior doctor. However, this is not the first time Ghosh has faced allegations. Last year, Akhtar Ali, the then Deputy Medical Superintendent at RG Kar and currently holding the same position at Murshidabad Medical College, accused Ghosh of corruption and illegal activities.

The allegations included trafficking in bodies and biomedical waste. Ali revealed that he had filed complaints with the Vigilance Commission and the Anti-Corruption Bureau, but his attempt to file a police case was rejected.

Former principal accused of illegally selling bodies, taking bribes

Ali elaborated on one of his complaints, stating, "(One) of my complaints was trafficking of biomedical waste. We all know that used syringes and medical waste like user hand gloves must be disposed of as per disinfection norms, but he (Dr. Ghosh) used to sell this material to Bangladeshi citizens." He shared this information with NDTV on Wednesday night.

Akhtar Ali accused Dr. Sandip Ghosh of being involved in illegal activities. "A security officer named Khan was involved in this trafficking..." Ali said, hinting at a bigger problem.

Ali also said that Ghosh sold bodies illegally. The head of Forensic Medicine and family members of the victims complained, but nothing happened. "Next, illegal selling of bodies. The Forensic Medicine Head had complained... family members (of those whose bodies he allegedly sold) also complained. A national commission summoned him..." Ali said, suggesting that no action was taken.

Ali accused Ghosh of taking bribes and failing students on purpose. "He was like a mafia person...," Ali said earlier. Despite making these allegations, Ali said that no action was taken. He even tried to file a police report, but was refused. "All these allegations I made... but no action was taken by authorities. Last night I went to a police station but they refused to accept a FIR," he said.

Former principal faces corruption charges

Ali also filed a case against Ghosh in court, which may be heard soon. He told ANI that Ghosh is a very corrupt person who has a lot of power. "He is a very corrupt person... Ghosh used to have a big security detail. He is very powerful."

Dr. Ghosh was in charge when his junior colleague was raped and murdered. He quit his job, saying he was responsible, but was quickly given a new job. The High Court questioned this and told him to take a long leave. "If the principal stepped down owing 'moral responsibility', (it is) rather serious that he is rewarded, within 12 hours, with another appointment..." the court said.

The CBI has been questioning Ghosh for many hours. The Supreme Court also asked questions about his new job and the delay in filing a police report. The government has ordered a special team to investigate the allegations. Ghosh may also face charges for revealing the identity of the murdered doctor.
