On Saturday night, a bike mechanic from Raza Nagar in Aligarh murdered his wife with a knife and then strangled her to death. After locking her body in the bathroom, he fled to Delhi. He returned to Aligarh in the early hours of Sunday, surrendered to the police, and confessed to the murder, leading them to recover the body.
Mehraj, a bike mechanic from the town of Harduaganj, married Nagma, a resident of Raza Nagar, four years ago. The couple had a three-year-old daughter named Naira. For the past four to five months, Mehraj had been living with his wife and daughter in a rented house in Raza Nagar, near his in-laws. Nagma suspected Mehraj of infidelity, leading to frequent arguments.
On Saturday night, upon returning home, Mehraj and Nagma had another argument that escalated. Mehraj told the police that the dispute turned violent, and in a fit of rage, he strangled Nagma and also stabbed her in the abdomen, though the cause of death was strangulation.
After committing the murder, Mehraj locked Nagma’s body in the bathroom and secured the house from the outside. He left his daughter with his sister in the neighborhood, claiming he was going out of town, and then traveled directly to Delhi by train. Fearing eventual capture, he returned to Aligarh and confessed his crime to the police at the Qaurshi police station.
The police recovered Nagma's body from the bathroom, which had begun to decompose. The body was sent for postmortem examination. Based on the complaint filed by Mehraj's brother-in-law, Wahid, a murder case was registered against Mehraj and his family members. The charges include harassment for dowry and murder.
Nagma's family is devastated by the incident. According to her brother Washid and sister-in-law Nisha, the couple had been having issues since shortly after their marriage, primarily due to Mehraj’s refusal to show his mobile phone to Nagma. This led to disputes, and previously, Mehraj had been accused of attempting to harm Nagma. This matter had been resolved with police intervention.
Nisha reported that she last spoke with Nagma via phone at around 10 PM on Saturday, and there was no indication of any trouble at that time. By 2 AM Sunday, the police had arrived at Mehraj’s home, revealing Nagma’s murder.
Nagma’s daughter is currently with her aunt and uncle, while Mehraj’s family has fled the area following the news of the murder. The police are actively searching for them, and Nagma’s family is seeking custody of the child.
