Mateen Ahmed joins AAP: In a significant blow to Congress, veteran leader and five-time MLA from Seelampur, Mateen Ahmed, has switched allegiance to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). His departure from Congress adds to the party’s challenges as it gears up for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections.

Senior leader’s family already with AAP

Mateen Ahmed, a long-time Congress stalwart, has officially joined AAP, following in the footsteps of his son Chaudhary Zubair and daughter-in-law Shagufta Chaudhary, who both joined the AAP on October 29. Shagufta is currently serving as a councilor in Delhi, further strengthening AAP's influence in Seelampur.

Legacy and role in Congress

Mateen Ahmed held the Seelampur seat under Congress from 1993 to 2013, establishing himself as a prominent face in the constituency. Additionally, he served as chairman of the Delhi Waqf Board twice, first in 2004 and then in 2009. He also held the position of Vice President of the Delhi Jal Board during his tenure in the Congress government.

Boost to AAP’s prospects in Seelampur

Known for his popularity in Seelampur, Ahmed’s shift to AAP is expected to bolster the party's presence in the constituency, where it has won consecutive terms in 2015 and 2020. With a competitive election forecasted, AAP’s latest move could give it a stronger foothold. However, sources indicate that some local Muslim leaders have expressed displeasure with Ahmed’s switch to AAP, indicating potential discord within the constituency.
