Rape of Minor: A young girl from South 24 Parganas district in West Bengal, who left home for a coaching class, has been found dead, leading to widespread protests. The incident has escalated tensions in the region, with angry locals vandalising and setting fire to a police camp.

Though the post-mortem report is still awaited, the BJP has claimed the incident to be a case of rape and murder. The party has strongly criticised the Trinamool Congress (TMC)-led government, accusing it of failing to protect women and mishandling the situation. BJP leaders have also referenced a similar case from August involving the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, calling for accountability from the state government and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Details of the incident

The victim, a minor, had gone to attend a coaching class in Mahishamari, South 24 Parganas, on Friday. When she failed to return home, her family filed a missing person complaint. Her body was later discovered in a field around 3:30 AM on Saturday, bearing multiple injuries. Local residents, furious over the incident, began protesting, which eventually led to the vandalization and torching of a nearby police camp.

Police investigation and arrest

The girl's father stated that she had informed him she would return home after her class. When she didn’t arrive, the family approached the police, leading to an investigation. Authorities have arrested 19-year-old Mostakin Sardar, who is accused of kidnapping and murder. Despite the arrest, protests continue with demonstrators still taking to the streets, carrying sticks and brooms. A large police presence has been deployed to prevent further escalation.

Political repercussions

Union Minister and BJP State President Sukanta Majumdar condemned the crime, alleging the girl was raped, and demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. "With Durga Puja days away, such crimes show Mamata Banerjee has lost control of the administration. These crimes happen repeatedly in Bengal, and she has no moral right to stay in power," he said.

However, the police have cautioned that the post-mortem report is still pending and rape allegations cannot be confirmed until the results are in.
