Thumka controversy: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Giriraj Singh has stirred controversy by criticising West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's dance moves at the Kolkata International Film Festival. Singh termed Mamata Banerjee's dance with celebrities, including Salman Khan and Sonakshi Sinha, as "inappropriate."
During the film festival event, Mamata Banerjee shared the stage with Bollywood celebrities like Salman Khan, Sonakshi Sinha, Mahesh Bhatt, Anil Kapoor, and Shatrughan Sinha, participating in a dance performance that later went viral.
Reacting to the widely circulated video, Giriraj Singh commented, "Jashn mana rahi hai, thumke laga rahi hai, yeh uchit nahi hai. (She is celebrating and dancing; this is inappropriate.)"
Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Shashi Panja strongly criticised Giriraj Singh's remarks, stating that even an apology at this point would be insufficient. Panja questioned the BJP's right to disrespect a woman and condemned Singh for his inappropriate comment.
TMC leader Mahua Moitra also condemned Giriraj Singh's comments and asserted that it is not his place to dictate what is appropriate. She praised Mamata Banerjee as the embodiment of "Maa Kali" and emphasised her democratic mandate as the elected Chief Minister of Bengal.
The TMC, in a statement on social media, accused the BJP of harbouring an "archaic mindset" and struggling to accept a woman in power who challenges their authority.
Giriraj Singh denied the TMC's allegations, stating that his comments were about Mamata Banerjee celebrating while the state faces issues like corruption and unemployment. He accused the TMC of attempting to create confusion by raising the issue.
The controversy highlights the ongoing political tensions between the BJP and TMC in West Bengal.
