The investigation into the rape and murder of a doctor from RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata is becoming increasingly complicated. While only one suspect, Sanjay Roy, has been arrested, recent video statements from the victim’s parents contradict allegations against the Kolkata Police, making the case even more perplexing.

Family Alleges Police Suppression

The parents of the deceased doctor, who joined the protesting doctors at RG Kar Hospital on Wednesday, accused the Kolkata Police of rushing to cremate the body, potentially suppressing evidence. "We wanted to keep our daughter’s body, but immense pressure was put on us, and the cremation was forced,” the father of the victim said during the protests.

The father further alleged that a senior police officer attempted to bribe him after his daughter's autopsy. "I refused to accept any money," he said, although he did not clarify why the bribe was offered.

Government's Response

West Bengal's Women and Child Development Minister, Shashi Panja, addressed the family’s concerns in a press briefing on Thursday. She stated that the government respects the family’s sentiments but would not conduct a "postmortem" on their comments. Panja urged the central authorities, who recently took over the case, to expedite the investigation and reveal the truth.

TMC Refutes Allegations

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) denied the family’s claims, pointing to a new video that allegedly shows the parents expressing satisfaction with the investigation. In response, the family clarified that this video was filmed under duress, shortly after their daughter’s cremation.

Panja criticized the BJP for politicizing the case, accusing them of spreading fake videos via social media, a claim further amplified by BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya, who posted the parents’ version of events on X (formerly Twitter). Nationwide protests have erupted over the doctor’s death, with junior doctors in West Bengal ceasing work in solidarity.
