According to initial reports, Khan reportedly committed suicide by shooting himself. Still, an official investigation is ongoing. Khan, who had fought on a BJP ticket from Gurez constituency in the 2024 J&K Assembly election, came second with 7,246 votes (40.34 per cent).
He lost to Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) leader Nazir Ahmad Khan, who received 8,378 votes (46.64 per cent).
Khan is an old political hand and was an MLA between 1996 and 2002. He had won against JKNC's Mohammad Anwar in the 1996 assembly poll. But he had to suffer back-to-back defeats in 2002, 2008, 2014 and 2024. The authorities are probing the circumstances surrounding his death.
