Jagat Prakash Nadda, the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), tendered his resignation as a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Rajya Sabha from Himachal Pradesh on Monday. His resignation follows his unopposed election to the upper house from Gujarat last month, alongside 56 other Rajya Sabha members whose tenures were concluding in April.

Nadda's decision to resign as an MP from Himachal Pradesh comes after his successful nomination as the BJP's candidate from Gujarat in the recently held Rajya Sabha elections. His uncontested victory in Gujarat, where the BJP secured four seats, marked a strategic move ahead of the crucial 2024 Lok Sabha elections. By opting for Gujarat instead of the Congress-ruled Himachal Pradesh, where victory for the BJP was uncertain, Nadda ensured his smooth transition to the upper house.

Chaos in Rajya Sabha elections

During the Rajya Sabha elections, Nadda was one of the 41 candidates who emerged victorious without facing any opposition. The BJP's triumph included a dramatic turn of events in Himachal Pradesh, where the party secured the lone Rajya Sabha seat following cross-voting by six Congress MLAs. The deadlock between Congress candidate Abhishek Singhvi and BJP nominee Harsh Mahajan was eventually resolved by a draw-of-lots, favoring Mahajan.

What has triggered mess in Congress?

In response to the rebellion within the party ranks, the Congress initiated damage control measures to avert a political crisis in Himachal Pradesh. Senior leaders Bhupinder Singh Hooda and DK Shivakumar were dispatched as observers to assess the situation and recommended that Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu continue as Chief Minister until the upcoming general elections.

The fallout from the cross-voting episode resulted in the disqualification of the six Congress MLAs by Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania.
