The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Saturday that Biparjoy, the extreme cyclone is likely to get more severe and extreme in next 24 hours. The cyclone is expected to move north-northeastwards now, the IMD informed.

The cyclone has already started sending huge waves and strong winds on Tithal Beach in Gujarat’s Valsad. The IMD has also advised fishermen not to venture into the seas off the coast of Gujarat, Kerala, Karnataka and Lakshadweep. As many as eight districts of Kerala are on yellow alert.

IMD informed the cyclone is likely to reach South Gujarat on Sunday or Monday.

What is meant by Biparjoy?

The cyclone was named Biparjoy by Bangladesh. It means ‘calamity’ in Bengali. The word was adopted by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) in 2020 for all kinds of tropical cyclones that form over the North Indian Ocean along with the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal.
