Two accused, who allegedly snatched a constable of the Delhi Police at gunpoint and took away his motorcycle, were shot and hurt in an encounter at Wazirabad, North Delhi. The police have said that on February 26, constables Dinesh and Sandeep were out on patrol duty on their motorcycle along the Outer Ring Road.
Officials said that the police officers chased a speeding vehicle close to Mukundpur Flyover and intercepted it successfully. The officers stopped the vehicle and requested the three people inside to cooperate for a normal check. The suspects, rather than cooperating, ran in various directions. One of the suspects was chased by Constable Dinesh on his motorbike.
In the fight, one criminal kept a gun at Constable Dinesh's head and demanded the release of his associate. To keep himself safe, the constable acquiesced, and the suspects escaped, leaving behind their car and escaping on the stolen motorbike. From the deserted car, two knives and a country-made pistol were recovered.
DCP North Raja Banthia identified that the deserted vehicle belonged to Salman, who resides in Laxmi Nagar. Salman was subsequently arrested from Sonipat, Haryana. Under interrogation, he said that a man called Kishan had bought the vehicle on his name and forced him to report the car stolen.
Investigators followed Kishan to Gharaunda, Karnal, Haryana, but discovered his phone to be turned off. Police, however, could track him using intelligence inputs to Gandhi Vihar's Tara Chowk in Timarpur, where he was laid in wait.
When the police tried to apprehend two men on a motorcycle, they tried to escape but lost control and fell. When they tried to run away on foot, they fired at the police. One of the bullets hit a police officer's bulletproof jacket, and the officers responded. Both suspects received gunshot injuries on their legs before being overpowered. The arrested suspects were named as Intizar Qureshi (46) and Kishan (31), both of whom have very long criminal histories.
The aftermath of this event, top cops of the Delhi Police organized an important security meet to review security arrangements in the city. On the agenda were measures against illegal migrants, protecting women, and controlling street crime. The security meet was arranged a day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a review meeting of the law-and-order scenario in Delhi.
Sources indicated that Special Commissioners of Police for Law & Order, Ravindra Singh Yadav (Zone 1) and Madhup Tiwari (Zone 2), informed Joint and Deputy Commissioners of required measures. Talks also centered on stopping gangster activities, cracking down on drug trade, and enhancing traffic management to ease congestion in major areas of Delhi.
