The opposition and the government got involved in a war of words in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday after Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge accused the government of providing budgetary allocations to two states while being partial to other states. The budget is to “keep some people happy”While speaking in the house, Kharge said, “No state got anything in the budget of the Modi government. The states where people have rejected the BJP, those states got nothing from this budget! Everyones plate is empty, and in the plate of two states there are Pakora and Jalebi! This budget has been brought only to save his chair.”“The Finance Minister is elected from Karnataka, we expected that we would get the maximum. INDIA Alliance opposes this budget,” Kharge said. वित्त मंत्री… pic.twitter.com/4OPJyIyvOL— Mallikarjun Kharge (@kharge) July 24, 2024Apart from Congress, other Opposition parties also condemned and criticized the union budget for making special allocations for Andhra Pradesh and Bihar. Notably, these are the two states where BJP has a coalition government with the TDP and the JDU, respectively.Kharge said that he had expected better allocation for Karnataka as the finance minister comes from the same state. However, responding to the charges, the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman quashed all the allegations calling them baseless. INDIA bloc called the budget discriminatoryMeanwhile, leaders of the opposition INDIA group protested today inside the Parliament building, calling for equal treatment for all states and sharply criticizing the Union Budget 2024 as discriminatory. The government was accused by the Opposition of favouring some states above others, including Bihar and Andhra Pradesh, which are run by important allies of the BJP and whose support is essential to the survival of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government.#WATCH | Delhi | Leaders of INDIA bloc protest against discriminatory Union Budget 2024, demand equal treatment to all States, in Parliament pic.twitter.com/c6uOyF1TQr— ANI (@ANI) July 24, 2024
