New Delhi: In a heart-wrenching incident in Bihar's Saran district, a 15-year-old boy tragically died following a botched gall bladder stone removal surgery conducted by an unqualified practitioner. The so-called doctor, identified as Ajit Kumar Puri, allegedly relied on YouTube videos to perform the complex procedure and is now on the run.

Surgery performed without consent

The teenager, who was suffering from vomiting and abdominal pain, was brought to Puri’s clinic in Madhaura by his family on a Friday night. According to family members, Puri began the surgery without obtaining the necessary consent or informing the family. Instead, he purportedly used his mobile phone to follow surgical instructions from YouTube.

Family’s harrowing account

Prahlad Prasad Shaw, the boy’s grandfather, recounted the tragic sequence of events. “The boy was initially feeling better after the vomiting subsided. However, Puri sent the father away on a pretext and proceeded with the surgery. When we questioned him about the boy’s increasing pain, he responded harshly, questioning our medical knowledge,” Shaw said. Despite attempts to revive the teenager with CPR, the boy died en route to a hospital in Patna. Puri, meanwhile, abandoned the body on the hospital stairs and fled the scene.

Ongoing investigation

The family has lodged a formal complaint with the local police, accusing Puri of gross negligence and malpractice. They claim that Puri’s lack of qualifications and his reliance on online videos led to the fatal outcome. In response, the police have registered a case against Puri and his clinic staff. Raids are currently underway to locate and apprehend the accused. The boy’s body has been sent for a postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
