In a major blow to Naxal insurgency, a joint operation between the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Jharkhand state police led to the killing of six Naxalites in Bokaro district on Monday morning, April 21, 2025. The intense firefight, which broke out in the dense forests of Lugu Hills in the Lalpania region, started at about 5:30 AM and is continuing till date, with reports indicating that a number of Naxalites are likely to be surrounded in the sealed-off area.
The operation, commanded by the CRPF's premier 209 Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) a commando battalion trained in jungle warfare, was mounted on the basis of intelligence reports about Naxalite activity in the area. The security personnel, with state police personnel accompanied by CoBRA commandos, had a heavy firefight with the ultras. The coordinated action by the CRPF and state police brings to light the increasing efficacy of intelligence-based operations in addressing Naxalite attacks. The seizure of sophisticated weapons also points to the militants' resolve to undertake subversive operations, and thus the operation represents a vital measure in disrupting their network. Yet the fact that the encounter was ongoing points to the fact that the situation remains volatile, with security forces remaining on high alert to forestall any counterattack.
Local officials have asked citizens to steer clear of the Lugu Hills region, citing security concerns because of the ongoing exchange of fire. The result of the operation will go a long way in crippling the Naxalite grip on Bokaro, a district that has been plagued by episodic rebel activity over the past few years. As the engagement continues, security forces are keenly interested in preventing any escape of the cornered militants, a turning point in Jharkhand's battle against Naxalism.
