New Delhi: West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has harshly criticized Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her comments and actions following the gruesome rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a Kolkata hospital. In an exclusive interview with India Today TV, Governor Bose expressed his dismay at Banerjee's demand to hang the accused before conducting a trial, labeling it as one of the most absurd statements he's heard in recent times. He likened Banerjee's behavior to that of the dual characters in Robert Louis Stevenson’s Dr. Jekyll and Hyde, suggesting a stark contrast in her public persona.

Roman emperor's voice: Governor Bose

The Governor did not mince words as he compared Banerjee's call for immediate execution to the whims of a Roman emperor, accusing her of acting with authoritarian disregard for due process. "The Chief Minister saying ‘hang the person and then continue the trial’ sounds like a Roman emperor's voice," Bose remarked. "The Chief Minister is behaving like Jekyll and Hyde, and people are aware of who is what," he added, alluding to the contradictory nature of her statements and actions.

Governor's displeasure with police investigation

Governor Bose also shared his dissatisfaction with the ongoing police investigation into the case. He revealed that he had written a detailed letter to the Chief Minister following the incident at KG Kar Hospital, outlining the necessary actions and requesting a report under Article 167 of the Constitution. Bose noted that this was not the first time he had reached out to Banerjee—he mentioned that he had sent 30 similar letters over the past five years, none of which had received a response. He labeled this lack of communication as "unconstitutional."

Mamata Banerjee blames outsiders for hospital vandalism

In a separate statement on Thursday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused outsiders and opposition parties of orchestrating the vandalism at RG Kar Hospital, distancing the agitators from the ongoing protests by doctors. She claimed that the violence was incited by the Left (Bam) and the BJP (Ram), who, according to her, have joined forces to disrupt peace in West Bengal.

"Bam (Left) and Ram (BJP) want to create unrest in Bengal and they both have come together to do this," Banerjee asserted. She maintained that those responsible for the vandalism were not affiliated with the doctors protesting the heinous crime.
