New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called for a 12-hour "Bangla Bandh" across West Bengal today, protesting police actions against participants of the 'Nabanna Abhijan' rally held on Tuesday. This bandh has sparked significant political tension in the state, with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemning the BJP's move as an attempt to malign the state’s image.

Mamata's sharp rebuke to BJP

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has strongly criticized the BJP’s bandh, alleging that the party is attempting to disrupt public life in the state without any legitimate reason. In her response, Banerjee stressed that her government remains dedicated to ensuring justice for the victims of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital incident. She also accused the BJP of using artificial intelligence to spread misinformation and said, "They are insulting me for no reason."

Impact on daily life

The bandh has had a noticeable impact on daily life in West Bengal. BJP workers attempted to block rail and bus services, prompting police intervention. Although schools and colleges remain open, there has been a significant drop in attendance.

In response to the BJP's bandh, Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers organized counter-protests in several areas, leading to clashes between supporters of the two parties. The situation remains tense as both sides continue to trade barbs.

Police detentions, opposition's stance

Prominent BJP leaders, including Locket Chatterjee, Rahul Sinha, and Roopa Ganguly, were detained by the police during the protests. Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition, joined the protests in Nandigram and warned that the BJP would 'stall' West Bengal if the police 'repression' did not cease immediately.

Government's stand

Alapan Bandopadhyay, the chief advisor to Mamata Banerjee, stated, “The government will not allow any bandh on Wednesday. We urge people not to participate in it. All necessary steps will be taken to ensure that normal life is unaffected.”

Violence, arrests in Kolkata

The bandh also saw violence erupting in parts of Kolkata, with over 200 people being arrested and several injured as police cracked down on protesters attempting to march towards the state secretariat. The rally was organized by a new student body, ‘Paschimbanga Chhatra Samaj,’ protesting the alleged rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

CBI, ED investigations

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is seeking the opinion of medical experts from AIIMS Delhi to determine if the main accused, Sanjay Roy, acted alone in the crime. Roy is currently under judicial custody. Meanwhile, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has initiated a money laundering probe against Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, based on the CBI's first information report (FIR) regarding financial irregularities.
