Bengal girl kidnapped, murdered: In a tragic incident that unfolded in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district, where a minor girl, who had left her home to attend a coaching class, was allegedly kidnapped and murdered. The incident has ignited public outrage, leading to protests and vandalism. A police camp in the area was set on fire by angry residents as tensions soared.

What has happened so far?

The victim, a minor girl from Mahishamari, South 24 Parganas, went missing on Friday after she did not return from her coaching class. Her family filed a missing person’s complaint later that evening. Tragically, her body was discovered in a field around 3:30 AM on Saturday, bearing multiple injuries.

The police launched an investigation as soon as the complaint was filed. A 19-year-old man, Mostakin Sardar, has since been arrested for the alleged kidnapping and murder.

Protests emerge as public anger mounts

The recovery of the girl's body sparked a wave of protests in the area. Enraged locals vandalized and set fire to a nearby police camp, expressing frustration at what they perceive as police inaction. Protesters armed with sticks and brooms took to the streets, and a significant police force has been deployed to prevent further escalation.

BJP claims rape, targets Mamata Banerjee

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has claimed that the girl was raped before being murdered, though the police have stated that the confirmation of rape awaits the post-mortem report. Union Minister and BJP State President Sukanta Majumdar criticized the state government, particularly targeting Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Majumdar stated, "Durga Puja celebrations are days away, and such heinous crimes are taking place in the state with innocent girls as the victims. This shows that Mamata Banerjee has lost control over the administration, which has become completely political. The way this minor girl was raped and the recurrence of these crimes in Bengal shows Mamata Banerjee has no legal or moral right to hold on to her post."

Awaiting post-mortem report

While BJP leaders accuse the state government of negligence, the police have made it clear that the post-mortem report is crucial to confirm whether rape occurred. Without it, claims of sexual assault remain speculative. Nonetheless, the incident has heightened political tensions in West Bengal, where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has faced criticism over similar incidents, including the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata in August.
