The incident that came to light and shocked everyone and now has been criticized by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Monday after taking suo moto notice was reminiscent of the "Chirharan of Draupadi" from Mahabharat. The case is regarding an incident in which an old woman was allegedly abused and displayed semi-naked by her son's in-laws in Punjab's Tarn Taran district.

The incident in Tarn Taran happened after her son married a woman against the wishes of her family after eloping. The incident involving the old mother happened in a village on March 31, a few days after the son decided to elope and marry a woman in defiance of her family's concerns.

Referring to the case, Justice Sanjay Vashisth took suo-motu (on its own) cognizance of the "barbaric and shameful incident" and decided to act against it as a public interest litigation (PIL). After this, a division bench of Acting Chief Justice GS Sandhawalia and Justice Lapita Banerji issued a notice of motion to the state government.

As per sources, four people have been taken into custody in connection with the incident after the victim’s complaint. In the complaint, the victim mentioned that she was alone at home when the in-laws of her son allegedly attacked her and forcibly removed her clothes and paraded her semi-naked throughout the village.

The family of the victim’s daughter-in-law has been arrested in connection with the matter. They have been identified as Kulwinder Kaur Mani (mother) of girl, Sharanjit Singh Shanni and Gurcharan Singh (brothers), Sunny Singh (a family friend).
