Durga idol immersion communal tensions: In a troubling incident that has sparked controversy, a video from Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh, shows a procession of Durga idol immersion turning into a scene of communal discord. The video captures individuals engaging in provocative behavior near a mosque, raising serious questions about the misuse of religion during festivals.

What religious hymn is this? Social media user asks

The video reportedly shows participants in the Durga idol immersion procession playing offensive and derogatory chants outside a mosque. "What religious hymn is this playing of 'their mother’s bh***a' in front of the mosque?" asks a social media user, highlighting the inappropriate nature of the actions. The incident occurred during the Dussehra festival, a time traditionally associated with devotion and the worship of the goddess Durga. However, the behavior witnessed raises the question: What connection does this have with religion, worship, or festivals?

Communal provocation and arrests, video surfaces

Allegations have surfaced that the procession deliberately stopped outside the mosque, played objectionable songs, and even threw gulal (colored powder) towards the sacred site. As a result, law enforcement intervened, leading to the arrest of three individuals and filing an FIR against over 40 participants. This is yet another instance of communal tensions flaring during a religious event, fueling an already volatile environment.

Growing trend of rise of religious intolerance

The growing trend of using Hindu festivals as a platform for provocation is a cause for concern. The incident in Barabanki is not an isolated one. Across several regions, reports have surfaced of Hindu youths transforming festivals into riotous occasions, marked by climbing mosques, removing green flags, and hoisting saffron ones. Such actions, driven by political agendas, are not only tarnishing the sanctity of religious observances but are also poisoning the minds of young people.

The real threat to society

This incident shines a light on the larger issue at hand: the dangerous political forces manipulating religious sentiments for their gain. As one observer put it, “The danger is not from Muslims, but from those politically dangerous elements who are tarnishing your religion and turning your children into rioters.”

These occurrences show that the real threat is not from other communities, but from individuals who misuse faith as a tool for violence and discord. It’s a call for introspection—how has faith, fasting, and worship turned into a cause for shame?
