On Friday evening, a tragic accident claimed the lives of Punyashreya Sharma, the bank manager of HDFC's Sector 31 branch in Gurugram, and Viraj Dwivedi, a cashier at the same branch. The incident occurred when their Mahindra XUV700 became submerged in a flooded underpass in Faridabad. This underpass was inundated due to heavy rainfall affecting Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR).

Details of the accident

According to police reports, Sharma and Dwivedi were returning to Faridabad from Gurugram when they encountered the flooded Old Faridabad railway underpass. Misjudging the depth of the water, their SUV began to sink. The two men attempted to escape the vehicle and swim to safety but were unable to do so. Emergency services were notified, and while Sharma's body was recovered from the SUV, Dwivedi's body was found after an extensive search that lasted until 4 a.m. on Saturday.

Weather conditions and alerts

The severe weather that led to this unfortunate event was part of a broader pattern of heavy rain impacting the region. On Friday, Delhi and the NCR experienced continued downpours, prompting the India Meteorological Department to issue an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall. The rainfall was attributed to a depression over southwest Uttar Pradesh. Traffic disruptions and waterlogging were reported across the NCR, with significant issues noted in areas such as Hero Honda Chowk, Rajiv Chowk, and IFFCO Chowk in Gurugram.

Current weather status

Rainfall persisted into Saturday, with a yellow alert indicating moderate rainfall. Delhi has recorded over 1,000 mm of rain this month, marking the highest precipitation since 2021 and the second highest in the past decade, according to IMD data.
