Bengaluru drenched in rain: City breaks 133-year old record with highest downpour in single day

The India Meteorological Department has issued a 'yellow' alert for the city. They have made predictions of a cloudy sky with frequent spells of rain or thunderstorms until June 5. Also, they have added that additional rainfall is expected on June 8 and 9.

Unexpectedly Bengaluru has received record-breaking rainfall on Sunday, crushing its 133-year-old record, making it the wettest day of June. The city has received around 111mm of rainfall which has caused widespread disruptions and disturbances. Over the past two days, Bengaluru has received 140.7 mm of rain, surpassing the average of 110.3 mm of rainfall in June, making it the highest-ever rainfall in a single day in June. 

What has IMD said? 

The India Meteorological Department has issued a 'yellow' alert for the city. They have made predictions of a cloudy sky with frequent spells of rain or thunderstorms until June 5. Also, they have added that additional rainfall is expected on June 8 and 9. This drastic change in weather is probably a result of the arrival of the Southwest Monsoon in Karnataka.

Heavy rainfall caused inundation 

The intense rainfall has resulted in waterlogging in several areas of the city, disrupting traffic and impacting metro operations. Hebbal Underpass, KFC Road leading to Gunjur Road, Chikkajala Kote Cross, Benniganahalli railway bridge, and Hebbal Circle were particularly affected, experiencing severe congestion. 

Visuals of uprooted trees, disrupting the services on the purple line of the Trinity Metro Station have surfaced. 

One of the X posts claimed that around 113 trees were uprooted because of the thunderstorm and rainfall. 

Amidst the escalating scenario, making it tougher for commuters, the netizens are having the best of their time. Several memes are also going viral, describing the situation of the residents.
