A 50-year-old woman, Pushpa Devi, sustained severe injuries in a wolf attack on Wednesday night in Bahraich. This attack marks a significant escalation in the ongoing crisis involving predatory wolves in the region. The search for the elusive 'killer' wolf continues, as authorities aim to mitigate the threat to local residents.

According to the updates, the horrifying incident occurred around 10 pm in Raipur Korean Tepra village, within the jurisdiction of Khairighat police station. Pushpa Devi was asleep when a wolf seized her by the throat. Her family, alerted by her cries, rushed to her aid, and the wolf fled. Despite immediate transport to a local hospital, Devi’s critical injuries necessitated referral to Bahraich District Hospital, where she is currently receiving intensive care.

Pushpa Devi’s son-in-law recounted, “The attack happened around 10 pm when she was sleeping. The wolf, possibly hiding after a child opened the door, grabbed her by the throat. Neighbors also came to help after hearing her cries, but the wolf had already escaped.”

Ongoing efforts

This attack follows a series of similar incidents in the area. Earlier on Wednesday, an 11-year-old girl was also injured by a wolf and is undergoing treatment at a local government hospital in Mahasi. The Uttar Pradesh Forest Department had previously captured the fifth 'killer' wolf, yet one remains at large.

To address the threat, the Forest Department launched "Operation Bhediya," targeting a pack of wolves responsible for attacks across 25-30 villages in the Mahsi tehsil. Snap cameras have been installed in potential wolf habitats, including Sikandarpur village, to monitor their movements. The operation aims to prevent further attacks, as reported casualties have risen to nine deaths and over 40 injuries across various villages.
