A huge tragedy hit Uttarakhand's Chamoli district after a glacier burst near Badrinath, trapping some laborers under the snow. In a major relief, rescue operations have been able to rescue 50 workers till date. Four workers have lost their lives, while one is still missing. The Indian Army and disaster management personnel are working day and night to rescue the victims of the tragedy.

As soon as the news of the glacier collapse reached them, Indian Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and Border Roads Organisation (BRO) teams rushed to the spot to initiate rescue operations. Over 100 army personnel are currently involved in relief operations. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also went to the spot to take stock of the situation and carried out an aerial survey to understand the ground situation.

PM Modi promises complete support

Chief Minister Dhami reported that Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a personal phone call to inquire about the matter and promised full support from the central government in all possible ways. "The Prime Minister also looked into the prevailing heavy snowfall and rains in the area and assured full support to the state," declared CM Dhami.

Weather department issues warning

Due to the extreme weather conditions, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has put out an orange alert for several districts, such as Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Pauri Garhwal, and Haridwar. The situation has become more difficult with heavy snowfall in the higher reaches on Friday.

How the incident unfolded

The glacier burst happened at around 11:00 AM in the vicinity of Badrinath Dham. The authorities were immediately informed, and ITBP and army troops were deployed for rescue. By lunchtime, over a dozen workers had been successfully rescued and taken to a military hospital for treatment.

The government has encouraged residents in the area to remain alert as rescue efforts for the missing worker continue. The weather is not favorable, but rescue teams continue to be determined in finding and evacuating those who are still trapped under ice.
