New Delhi: In a disturbing incident that has sent shockwaves through the community, two four-year-old girls were sexually assaulted at a reputable school in Badlapur, a town near Mumbai. As the nation grapples with the recent rape and murder of a resident doctor in Kolkata, this new case highlights the urgent need for child safety measures within educational institutions.

What actually happened?

The sexual abuse occurred on August 12 and 13, when a school sweeper, employed as a contract worker, allegedly assaulted the young girls. The victims’ trauma came to light after one of the girls refused to attend school. A subsequent medical examination confirmed the abuse, revealing that another girl had also suffered a similar fate.

Why are the protestors agitating?

Outraged citizens have taken to the streets, demanding justice for the victims and accountability from the school administration. Here are the key points:

Delayed FIR

Parents faced an agonizing wait of over 12 hours before they could file a First Information Report (FIR) with the police. The delay has fueled anger and frustration among the community, who expected swift action in such a grave matter.

Citywide Bandh

Protestors have called for a citywide bandh (shutdown) to draw attention to the issue. Local unions, including rickshaw drivers, bus operators, and shopkeepers, have joined the cause, emphasizing the urgency of safeguarding children, especially girl students, within educational premises.

School administration’s response

The school administration’s handling of the situation has come under scrutiny. While the principal and class teacher have been suspended, questions remain about the initial delay in reporting the incident. The school has also severed ties with the agency responsible for providing sweepers.

Rail protests

Not limited to the school premises, citizens have also staged protests at Badlapur railway stations. Train services were disrupted as demonstrators voiced their demand for justice and child safety. Dr. Swapnil Nila, spokesperson for the central railway, confirmed the impact of the protests on train movement.
