In a significant blow to beer lovers, the Telangana government has announced a 15% hike in beer prices, making it one of the costliest states for beer consumption in South India. Effective from February 11, the revised pricing structure is part of the state’s new excise policy, aimed at increasing revenue from alcohol sales.
With the new price adjustment, the cost of a standard 650ml beer bottle is expected to rise to approximately ₹170-₹180, depending on the brand. The decision was officially implemented following an order issued late at night by Principal Secretary (Revenue) S.A.M. Rizvi. The Telangana Beverages Corporation Limited has been authorized to enforce the revised pricing, following recommendations made by a panel led by retired Justice Jaiswal, which initially proposed the 15% price hike.
The price revision follows recent supply disruptions in Telangana’s beer market. Last month, United Breweries Limited (UBL), owned by Heineken, temporarily halted beer supply in the state. The company demanded a 33% increase in beer prices, which led to a shortfall of popular brands such as Kingfisher, Heineken, Amstel, and London Pilsner. The price dispute created concerns among beer retailers and consumers, further exacerbating supply chain issues.
As per government directives, even the existing beer stock will now be sold at the revised rates. The price surge is expected to impact beer consumption patterns in the state, with many consumers likely to reconsider their alcohol expenses. Telangana has been one of India's leading beer-consuming states, but with this hike, it now ranks among the most expensive places to purchase beer.
