A tragic incident unfolded at a private nursing home in Patiala, where a 31-year-old woman lost her life immediately after giving birth, allegedly due to the procedures conducted by a bachelor of ayurvedic medicine and surgery (BAMS) doctor. This incident, occurring on Thursday night, has triggered a thorough investigation by the Punjab Health Department, as the family of the deceased holds the Rajan Nursing Home accountable for negligence.

Probing the Alleged Negligence

The family's grief and accusations have brought attention to the norms governing medical practices. According to reports, only doctors holding an MBBS degree are authorised to conduct normal deliveries at primary health centers. In government hospitals providing secondary and tertiary care, gynaecologists are responsible for overseeing deliveries, ensuring specialised medical attention.

Response from Health Authorities

Dr. Hatinder Kaur, the director of the Punjab Health Department, has directed the Patiala civil surgeon to furnish a preliminary report within 48 hours. Shedding light on the medical events, Dr. Kiran (BAMS) from Rajan Nursing Home stated that the woman experienced post-delivery complications, leading to profuse bleeding. Despite efforts, the nursing home couldn't manage the situation, necessitating the woman's referral to Rajindra Hospital. Unfortunately, she succumbed shortly after being admitted to the hospital.

In the aftermath of this tragedy, a postmortem examination was conducted at Rajindra Government Hospital. However, doctors have refrained from disclosing specific details from the report. Meanwhile, Krishan Singh, the deceased's husband, has levelled accusations of negligence, pointing to systemic failures in ensuring patient safety and proper medical protocols.
