The West Bengal Police have arrested a 24-year-old e-rickshaw driver, Soumitra Roy, in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl in the New Town area of Kolkata. The tragic incident unfolded after the victim’s body was discovered near a canal early on Friday morning, showing signs of physical injury. The police arrested Roy on Sunday, following an investigation that involved analyzing CCTV footage from multiple locations in New Town.
According to the police, the victim had been seen on CCTV footage moving between her home in Gourangnagar and nearby Kestapur-Baguighati areas. On Thursday night, after an argument with her mother, the victim left home. Roy, who had recently moved into the same neighborhood, spotted her around 11 PM and offered her a ride. He reportedly drove her through various areas of the city, eventually taking her to a secluded spot where he allegedly raped her and then strangled her to death.
It was revealed that Roy had gained the victim’s trust before the incident. He had offered to drop her off after seeing her alone, approximately two kilometers from her home. After dropping off other passengers at various locations, Roy reportedly took her to a remote area where he committed the crime.
The police are currently investigating all aspects of the case. When asked if other individuals were involved, officers assured that they were exploring every lead. Roy has confessed to his involvement in the crime, and authorities are piecing together the details surrounding the tragic incident. It was also confirmed that Roy is originally from Nadia district.
