In a landmark ruling, the High Court held that it is not cruelty when a husband expects his wife to do household chores.

The Delhi High Court on Thursday made it clear that it is not cruelty if the husband expects the wife to take care of the home. The division bench consisting of Justices Suresh Kumar Kait and Neena Bansal Krishna has rendered this ruling, which was heard in response to an appeal filed by someone challenging a family court ruling. Because of his brutality, the man's wife had filed for divorce. Nevertheless, the family court dismissed the wife's appeal.

Wedlock comes with responsibilities

Emphasizing the responsibilities that come with marriage, the Delhi High Court said that when two parties enter wedlock, they intend to share the responsibilities, the work done by a wife for her household is done out of love and affection and should not be compared with the work of a maid. According to the Court, the expectation of domestic work from the wife comes from a division of responsibilities and cannot be termed as cruelty. Despite setting aside the family court's decision and giving the man the right to divorce, the court's comments on household chores have caught people's attention.

How was the case initiated?

The statement from the court came while addressing an appeal by a man against a family court order refusing to dissolve his marriage on the ground of cruelty by his wife. The appellant's husband said that his wife does not contribute to the household chores and falsely implicates criminal cases against him. He also alleged that he was forced to live separately from his family.
