In a concerning development, law enforcement officials in Assam have apprehended a student from the esteemed Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, who was allegedly en route to join the ranks of the dreaded terrorist group Islamic State (ISIS). The incident unfolded on Saturday when the student was intercepted in the vicinity of Hajo, a town situated approximately 30 kilometres from Guwahati.According to the police, the individual had professed allegiance to ISIS and was actively making arrangements to travel and unite with the extremist organisation. This alarming revelation comes mere days after the arrest of Haris Farooqi, the self-proclaimed head of ISIS in India, and his associate Anurag Singh, who were apprehended in Dhubri district after illegally crossing the border from Bangladesh.In a statement released on the social media platform X, Director General of Police GP Singh acknowledged the situation, stating, Reference: @IITGuwahati student pledging allegiance to ISIS - the said student has been detained while travelling, and further lawful follow up would take place.The catalyst for the police action was an email purportedly sent by the student himself, expressing his intentions to join the terrorist outfit. After receiving an email, we got about to verify the authenticity of the contents and started an investigation, explained Additional Superintendent of Police (STF) Kalyan Kumar Pathak.Authorities promptly contacted the IIT-Guwahati administration to ascertain the students whereabouts, as he had been reported missing since noon, with his mobile device switched off. Hailing from Delhis Okhla region and currently in the fourth year of his graduate studies, the students journey was halted by the vigilant law enforcement officials with the assistance of locals.After initial questioning, he has been brought to the STF office. We are verifying the motive of the email, Pathak stated, adding that a black flag resembling the ISIS insignia was recovered from the students hostel room. We are going through the items seized, it is too early to say much. We are investigating the intention of sending the email.
