New Delhi: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the upcoming implementation of a new law proposing life imprisonment for those convicted in 'love jihad' cases. This move aligns with the recent legislative changes in Uttar Pradesh, where a similar bill was passed targeting forced or deceitful religious conversions.

Sarma made this announcement during a BJP state executive meeting in Guwahati, emphasizing the need to address the changing demographics in Assam, which he described as a "huge concern" and a "matter of life and death."

New domicile policy for government jobs

In addition to the 'love jihad' law, Sarma revealed a new domicile policy restricting government job eligibility to individuals born in Assam. This policy aims to prioritize local residents and curb illegal immigration. Sarma highlighted the importance of population control measures and the recognition of Bengali-speaking Bangladeshi Muslims, known as 'Miya,' as indigenous people of Assam. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to protect the interests of Assam's indigenous communities.

Aadhaar cards and birth certificates for newborns

Sarma also announced a pilot project to issue Aadhaar cards and birth certificates to newborns in 13 medical colleges across Assam. This initiative aims to streamline the process, allowing children to receive essential documents shortly after birth. The project will initially launch in medical colleges and expand to district hospitals, eliminating the need for parents to queue for these documents later.

Financial support for BPL youths

In a bid to boost employment and entrepreneurship, the Assam government will provide ₹2 lakh to Below Poverty Line (BPL) youths to set up small industries. District-wise interviews for the first phase will take place from August 16 to September 5, with funds distributed by September 30. This initiative, part of the Mukhya Mantri Atma Nirbhar Asom scheme, will benefit 30,000 youths in the first phase and 70,000 more in the second phase.
