Assam: Army Major, wife held for allegedly abusing domestic help in Haflong

An Army Major and his wife have been arrested in Assam’s Haflong in Dima Hasao district on charges of allegedly abusing a minor domestic help on Tuesday. The police said that the young girl was subjected to sexual assault and was found with a “broken nose, teeth and a cut on tongue.”

According to media reports, The victim was a girl from Haflong, Dima Hasao who was taken under the care of the couple. The local police were alerted to this horrifying situation on September 24, 2023, says Dima Hasao SP Mayank Kumar.

Haflong Police takes action…

Following the reports, sources suggest that the Dima Hasao Police took immediate action and a case was registered under Haflong PS Case No.74/2023.

SP Kumar said that the case has been registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including U/S 326 (Voluntarily causing grievous hurt), 374 (Unlawful compulsory labour), 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 506 (Criminal intimidation), 370 (Buying or disposing of any person as a slave), and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention).

Moreover, additional charges were also made under section 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, and section 3 of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.

“During investigation, prima facie evidence was found against the Army major and his wife, and they were arrested in connection with the case and forwarded to judicial custody,” the SP said.

 The Army officer has been identified as Major Shailendra Yadav and his wife Kimmy Ralson. According to media reports, Major Yadav married Kimmy Ralson, a Haflong town resident during his tenure in Haflong. After his transfer from Haflong to Himachal, Kimi Ralson took a young girl from Haflong with her to assist with household chores.

As per the comments of SP Kumar, the girl is now receiving medical treatment in Haflong said “Further probe is underway. Strict action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation.”
