The chief minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, has been seeking support from the opposition parties against the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill.

A day after Rajya Sabha passed the Delhi services bill, the chief minister of Delhi on Tuesday wrote a letter to Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge, MP Rahul Gandhi, and other opposition leaders including Nitish Kumar, Uddhav Thackeray, Mamata Banerjee, Sharad Pawar, etc. thanking them for their support on the issue.

The letter from Kejriwal says, “I write to you expressing gratitude on behalf of the 2 crore people of Delhi for your party’s support in rejecting and voting against the GNCTD (Amendment) Bill, 2023.”

“I would like to place on record my heartfelt appreciation for ‘championing the rights of the people of Delhi inside as well as outside the Parliament. I am certain that your unflinching loyalty towards the principles of our Constitution will be remembered for decades,” he added.

“We look forward to your continued support in the fight against forces that are undermining the Constitution,” added further.

Notably, the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill with 131 MPs voting in its favour and 102 opposing it has been given go-ahead by Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. Before this, it had been passed by the Lok Sabha. After the amendment, the law of the ordinance makes it possible for the elected chief minister to be overruled by Centre-appointed bureaucrats.
