New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal has officially resigned from his role as Delhi Chief Minister. The resignation was submitted to Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena on Tuesday evening. This decision follows Kejriwal’s announcement over the weekend, where he declared his intention to step down within two days. He stated that he would not resume the position until the public verified his honesty and expressed a willingness to face a "test of fire" post-incarceration.

Kejriwal’s resignation and Atishi’s appointment

On Tuesday evening, Kejriwal met with Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, who represents the central government in the national capital, to formally tender his resignation. During this meeting, Kejriwal recommended Atishi as his successor. Accompanying Kejriwal was his former deputy, Manish Sisodia, who, like Kejriwal, has also been released on bail in connection with the same case.

Atishi’s vision for Delhi

Immediately following her appointment, Atishi addressed reporters, emphasizing her commitment to serving the people of Delhi and ensuring a successful outcome in the upcoming Delhi elections. She expressed her gratitude to Kejriwal, referring to him as her "mentor" and underscoring her dedication to his return to office.

Earlier in the day, the AAP announced that Atishi had been unanimously elected as the leader of the party’s legislative group, effectively making her the new Chief Minister until the next Assembly election, scheduled for February. However, Kejriwal has called for an early election, potentially as soon as next month.

In her statement, Atishi reaffirmed that her government’s primary goal is to facilitate Kejriwal’s return to power. She urged voters to support her in order to "make your son, your brother, Chief Minister again."

"I am honored by the trust placed in me by Arvind Kejriwal and the AAP. While I am grateful for this responsibility, I am also saddened that Arvind had to resign," Atishi said. She also committed to defending the AAP against what she described as the Bharatiya Janata Party's ("BJP") attempts to undermine the party through "fake charges."

Kejriwal’s statement and allegations

On Sunday, just two days after his release from jail, Kejriwal made a startling announcement that shocked even some within his party. He stated that he would not resume his duties as Delhi Chief Minister until he received "justice from the people's court," despite having been exonerated by legal courts.

"I have received justice from the legal system; now I seek justice from the people. If you believe I have worked for you, vote for me," Kejriwal declared, reinforcing his stance against the corruption charges leveled against him and accusing the BJP of attempting to frame him.
