In a tragic incident, a teenage boy died by suicide while in police custody on Sunday night. The incident took place in the Dayanand Nagar area of Shamli’s Sadar Kotwali region. The 17-year-old boy had been apprehended after he eloped with a local girl on Saturday. The police had located the couple in Chandigarh and were on their way back to Bijnor when tragedy struck.

The officer in charge, Sub-Inspector Sunil Kumar, had briefly stopped at his brother Satendra’s residence in Shamli for the night. It was during this stay that the boy hanged himself in one of the rooms. The discovery of the boy's body sent shockwaves through the police department, and authorities immediately arranged for a post-mortem examination in Shamli. In the boy’s home village of Mundakhedi, police personnel have been deployed to maintain order amidst growing concerns over the incident.

Police investigation and timeline of events

The boy, identified as Deepak, son of Arvind Singh, had eloped with a 17-year-old girl from a nearby village. Following the girl’s disappearance, her father lodged a complaint at the Syoohara police station, leading to a swift search. The boy’s friend, who had been detained earlier by the police, revealed that the couple had fled to Chandigarh.

Subsequently, a team consisting of Inspector Sunil Kumar and two constables went to Chandigarh, where the couple was found on Sunday. The team was transporting the couple back to Bijnor when they decided to stop overnight in Shamli at the inspector’s brother's house.

Boy found dead, police deployed in village

In the late hours of the night, Deepak was found hanging in one of the rooms of the residence. Babri police were immediately informed, and the body was sent for a post-mortem. Police have also been deployed in Deepak’s home village to prevent unrest as local residents cope with the shock. Authorities are attempting to calm the boy's family, who are devastated by the sudden turn of events.
