The Congress party experienced significant embarrassment as the Haryana assembly election trends took a dramatic turn after the initial hours of counting. Initially, Congress appeared to be leading comfortably in over 60 seats, igniting celebrations among party workers. However, as counting continued, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) surged ahead, claiming the lead in 50 seats, while Congress’s standing dwindled to only 35 constituencies, according to the official trends reported on the Election Commission of India (ECI) website.

From celebration to disappointment

The jubilant atmosphere among Congress supporters, characterised by bursting firecrackers, distributing sweets, and playing drums, swiftly shifted to dismay as the party’s prospects dimmed. A viral video captured the moment when dhol wallas were seen leaving the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters in Delhi, reflecting the abrupt change in mood. When questioned, they remarked, "They asked us to leave," underscoring the stark contrast between initial hopes and the reality of the situation.

Allegations of delay and manipulation

Amid this unfolding scenario, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh lodged an official complaint with the ECI on Tuesday, criticising the delays in updating election trends on the official website. He described the situation as an "inordinate and unacceptable delay," raising concerns about the accuracy and timeliness of the data being provided. Alongside Ramesh, other Congress leaders, including Pawan Khera, expressed their frustrations, alleging that the outdated data could be influencing administrative decisions and potentially benefiting the BJP in the ongoing electoral process.

The Congress party's unexpected turn of events highlights the volatile nature of electoral politics, leaving supporters to grapple with the implications of this unfolding situation.
