Himanta Biswa Sarma Questions Congress MP's Wife's Ties to Pakistani National and Raises Security Concerns. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has intensified his scrutiny of Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and his wife, Elizabeth Colburn, alleging a more extensive connection to Pakistan than previously known. Sarma's accusations center on Colburn's professional relationship with Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, a Pakistani national and advisor to Pakistan’s Planning Commission, and suggesting potential security implications.
Sarma shared screenshots of old posts from Sheikh on X, arguing that these posts highlight a "deeply rooted" relationship between the Gogois and the Pakistani national. One post from 2019 showed Sheikh commenting on illegal migrants from Bangladesh to India. Sarma noted that Colburn worked under Sheikh at LEAD Pakistan, an organization he claims operated under the guise of climate change initiatives. Sarma suggested a closer examination of Sheikh's work revealed a substantial involvement, particularly in Assam.
Sarma also shared a 2020 post in which Sheikh praised Gogoi for raising the Delhi riots issue in Parliament28. Sarma stated that Sheikh, whom he identifies as Colburn's colleague and supervisor, shared "anti-India propaganda" and cheered Gogoi's actions.
These accusations follow earlier claims by the BJP that Gogoi's wife has links to Pakistan and the ISI. The BJP has also questioned why Colburn has not taken Indian citizenship after 12 years of marriage. Gogoi has dismissed these allegations as "laughable and entertaining"
