Sanjay Roy, who stands accused in the harrowing murder and rape case involving a doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has steadfastly maintained his innocence. Roy was arrested on August 10, following a gruesome incident reported a day earlier. The arrest was largely based on CCTV footage that captured his movements and a Bluetooth headset found at the crime scene.

Roy's Claims of Innocence

According to Roy's lawyer, Kavita Sarkar, Roy asserts that he is being wrongfully accused. During a recent polygraph test, Roy reportedly maintained his innocence, claiming the test questions regarding his actions after the murder were irrelevant since he denies committing the crime. Roy's responses included an assertion that the woman was unconscious when he entered the seminar hall, where the murder took place.

Details of the Incident

On August 9, Roy alleged that he discovered the woman, who was covered in blood, in the seminar room. He described a panicked reaction, claiming he fled the scene in fear. Roy has further stated that he did not know the victim personally and believes he is being framed. When questioned about his failure to report the incident to the police, Roy cited fear of not being believed, according to Hindustan Times.

Defense's Perspective

Sarkar has suggested that a security lapse could have enabled another individual to commit the crime. She pointed out that Roy’s easy access to the seminar hall could indicate inadequate security measures that allowed someone else to exploit the situation.

Notably, the trainee doctor, who was raped and murdered while sleeping during a 36-hour shift, sustained severe injuries. The autopsy revealed multiple signs of sexual assault and numerous external and internal injuries.
