New Delhi: A devastating explosion and fire occurred at the Escientia pharmaceutical company in the Atchutapuram Special Economic Zone, Andhra Pradesh, on Wednesday afternoon, resulting in the loss of 15 people and leaving over 40 injured. The incident took place during the lunch break, causing widespread panic and destruction. The explosion and subsequent fire led to severe burn injuries to several workers.

According to officials from the Atchutapuram Police Station, two workers from Rambilli mandal succumbed to their burn injuries. Several others suffered serious burns and are being treated at nearby hospitals, including the NTR District Hospital in Anakapalli. Some of the critically injured are being rushed to hospitals in Visakhapatnam for further treatment.

Investigation underway to uncover cause of explosion

The affected company, one of the largest pharmaceutical firms in the Special Economic Zone (SEZ), employs over 1,000 workers, making it a significant employer in the region. The extent of the damage and impact on the workforce is still being assessed.

In response to the incident, the Andhra Pradesh Home Minister has instructed both the district collector and the Superintendent of Police to visit the site to ensure that the injured workers receive top-notch medical care. Authorities are currently conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the reactor explosion.
