Amritpal Singh, a radical Sikh preacher and Member of Parliament (MP) from Khadoor Sahib, currently detained in Assam's Dibrugarh district under the National Security Act (NSA), has approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court to quash the proceedings against him. On Friday, July 19, Singh filed a petition asserting that his detention is illegal and should be annulled.
In his petition, Singh argued that his detention serves no purpose other than punishing him for being vocal against the state and Central governments on significant political issues. "It serves no purpose whatsoever except to punish the petitioner for being vocal against the state and the Central governments on major political issues, which is a democratic right of every citizen of this country," he stated.
Singh further contended that the grounds for his detention are primarily based on social media posts uploaded by various individuals worldwide, which he claimed have minimal impact in Punjab. "The security of the state of India cannot be so fragile as to be impacted by social media posts," Singh added in the petition.
The petition also highlighted the alleged infringement of Singh's right to life and liberty. It claimed that his preventive detention for more than a year, coupled with being held far from his home state, was excessively harsh and vindictive. "The distance between his home and state of detention is almost 2,600 km," the petition noted.
Amritpal Singh was arrested in Rode village, Moga, after he and his supporters forcefully entered the Ajnala police station on February 23 last year. They broke barricades, brandished swords and guns, and clashed with police personnel to free one of his aides from custody.
Singh, who was recently elected as MP from Punjab's Khadoor Sahib constituency, was flown to Delhi earlier this month on a four-day custody parole to take his oath as a member of parliament.
