Union Home Minister Amit Shah conducted a comprehensive review of the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir, coupled with preparations for the upcoming annual Amarnath pilgrimage, on Sunday. Sources close to the matter revealed that Shah convened a high-level meeting at North Block, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent directives to bolster counter-terror capabilities post a series of terror incidents, including an assault on a bus carrying pilgrims.

During the meeting, Shah, accompanied by top security officials such as National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha, and Army Chief General Manoj Pande, among others, delved into crucial discussions regarding intensifying counter-terror operations in the region. The aim was to chalk out broad guidelines in alignment with Prime Minister Modi's directives to combat terrorism effectively.

Security Briefings and Strategic Insights

The discussions also revolved around briefing Shah about the prevailing security scenario in Jammu and Kashmir. This encompassed evaluations on the deployment of forces along the International Border and Line of Control, infiltration activities, ongoing anti-terror operations, and the operational strength of terrorist elements within the Union Territory.

Immediate Action Plans and Security Measures

In response to the recent surge in terrorist activities, including fatal attacks in Reasi, Kathua, and Doda districts, which resulted in the loss of lives and injuries, Shah is said to have laid out immediate action plans for security agencies. This was aimed at swiftly implementing strategies in accordance with the prime minister's directives to enhance security measures.

Amarnath Pilgrimage Arrangements and Safety Measures

Amidst these security deliberations, Shah also focused on the upcoming Amarnath pilgrimage, scheduled to commence on June 29. Detailed discussions were held regarding the travel routes, safety protocols, and logistical arrangements for the pilgrims. Measures such as issuing RFID cards for real-time tracking, insurance coverage for pilgrims and animals, and ensuring smooth transportation from the airport and railway stations to the pilgrimage base camp were underscored.

Emphasis on Security and Comfort of Pilgrims

The overarching emphasis of the meeting was to ensure a seamless and secure environment for all pilgrims embarking on the sacred journey to the Amarnath cave shrine.
