New Delhi: Actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut is set to portray Indira Gandhi in her highly anticipated film *Emergency*, which examines a pivotal period in Indian history. The film’s release is scheduled for September 6 and features Anupam Kher, Mahima Chaudhry, Milind Soman, and Shreyas Talpade in significant roles. The production is backed by Zee Studios, along with Kangana Ranaut and Renu Pitti.

Kangana’s insights on historical leadership

In a recent live interview with Aaj Tak, Ranaut was asked about her views on who she considers the most powerful Prime Minister in India's history. Given her role in the film, the question naturally revolved around Indira Gandhi, who remains a prominent figure in Indian political history. The Congress party often lauds Gandhi for her influential role during a critical period that included the India-Pakistan partition.

Ranaut expressed her respect for historical figures while highlighting the evolution of leadership. She said, when we praise someone, it doesn't mean we're disrespecting others. The past was a different era, with its own unique circumstances. For instance, it would take six months to get a gas connection, which reflects the frustration of the common people, as depicted in our films. This widespread discontent led to the Jan Andolan movement in the mid-1970s

Comparing historical and modern leadership

Drawing comparisons between past and present, Ranaut noted the transformation in India's global stature. She contrasted Indira Gandhi's treatment by foreign leaders with the current Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s standing on the world stage. “Today we are in a different world. India is poised to become the 3rd largest economy. Look around the world today. Unfortunately, Indira Gandhi was treated poorly by American presidents, who would keep her waiting for 6 hours and speak to her in a condescending manner. In contrast, our current Prime Minister Modi commands respect globally. That's why I say those were different times, a different era, she said.

Ranaut’s stance on political leadership

Despite her portrayal of Gandhi, Ranaut remains firm on her political beliefs. She emphasized that leadership should be decided by the people rather than being concentrated in a single family. Her stance reflects her broader views on governance and democratic choice.

As the release date for *Emergency* approaches, Ranaut's reflections provide a fascinating backdrop to her film's exploration of a significant era in Indian history.
