New Delhi: In the lead-up to the Delhi assembly elections, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative aimed at empowering Dalit students. On Saturday, he announced the Dr. Ambedkar Samman Scholarship, which will provide free foreign education for eligible Dalit students in the capital. This scholarship is positioned as a direct response to perceived insults directed at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar by the ruling BJP.

A Response to Insults

Kejriwal articulated his motivations during a press conference at the AAP headquarters, stating that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had "insulted and made fun of Babasaheb Dr. Ambedkar in Parliament." He emphasized that this disrespect has caused deep pain among millions who hold Ambedkar in high regard.

The former chief minister highlighted Ambedkar's belief in education as a transformative force, noting that he himself earned a PhD in the United States despite significant challenges.

Scholarship Details

Under the newly announced scholarship scheme, any Dalit student from Delhi who gains admission to a foreign university will have their entire educational expenses covered by the Delhi government. This includes tuition fees, travel costs, and accommodation expenses. Kejriwal also mentioned that children of government employees would be eligible for this initiative, although specifics regarding the application process and timelines were not provided.

Broader Election Promises

As the February elections approach, Kejriwal has made additional promises aimed at securing votes. He pledged ₹2,100 per month to all adult women and assured free medical treatment for senior citizens at both government and private hospitals if AAP is re-elected. These commitments are part of a broader strategy to appeal to various voter demographics ahead of the crucial polls.

Conclusion

The introduction of the Dr. Ambedkar Samman Scholarship reflects AAP's commitment to addressing social inequalities and promoting education among marginalized communities. By framing this initiative as a counter to political disrespect towards Dr. Ambedkar, Kejriwal aims to galvanize support from Dalit voters and others who value educational opportunities.
