New Delhi: In Aligarh, as in other parts of the state like Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar, and Shamli, shopkeepers on the Kanwar Yatra route have started displaying their names in their shops. This order, which took effect on July 19, has been implemented on Ramghat Road, where owners of hotels, dhabas, and food stalls have begun writing their names and mobile numbers on their establishments.

Administration's role in Kanwar Yatra

SP City Mrigank Shekhar Pathak explained that this initiative is part of the government's effort to ensure safety and accountability. The area police have been given the responsibility to enforce this order. ADM City Amit Kumar Bhatt assured that the government's directive will be fully implemented.

"No one will be harmed by identifying the shops and mentioning the names of the owners. This will not only create a sense of security in the minds of people but action can also be taken at the level of FSDA in case of any deficiency in food, selling products with Halal certification, or any other incident," he said.

What is the importance of Kanwar Yatra?

The Kanwar Yatra is a big annual event where thousands of Shiva devotees, known as Kanwariyas, carry holy water from the sacred river Ganges and offer it to Shiva temples. This pilgrimage usually takes place during the month of Sawan. In Aligarh, major temples like Achleshwar Mahadev, Mangaleshwar Mahadev, and Khereshwar Mahadev witness a large influx of devotees during this period.

Aligarh has around 1,200 big and small temples and Shivalayas in the city, with more than 5,000 across the district. During Sawan, devotees travel to places like Haridwar, Rishikesh, Garhmukteshwar, and Narora to offer their prayers.

Increase in number of Dak Kanwar

In recent years, there has been an increase in the trend of bringing Dak Kanwar among the devotees. Most of these devotees come from Mathura, Bhind, Morena, Bharatpur, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh. The district's devotees also participate in large numbers, a practice that was previously limited to Shivratri.

Strict measures ahead of Kanwar Yatra

The district administration has installed boards on Ramghat Road to guide and inform the devotees. Heavy vehicles are banned from entering the city on Mondays to ensure the safety and smooth flow of the Kanwar Yatra. Temples along the Kanwar route will have strict security arrangements to maintain order and prevent any untoward incidents.
