Fresh visuals emerged on Monday morning showing Delhi residents queueing up to collect water from tankers amid the ongoing water crisis in the capital. Delhi faces a severe shortage due to unprecedented summer heat, with temperatures hovering around the 50-degree Celsius mark in parts of the city. Earlier visuals showed people scrambling with empty buckets to reach water tankers, with some even seen jumping the queue to get to the top of the tankers to fill their vessels.

Supreme Court will hear plea today

Amid the shortage, the Supreme Court will hear the Delhi government's plea for more water supply on Monday. The AAP government has reached out to the Centre and the apex court seeking additional water supply from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh for a month.

Delhi government's plea

In its petition to the Supreme Court, Delhi emphasized that the need for water has increased in the national capital amid the sweltering heat. "Delhi's need for water has increased in the scorching heat. It is everyone's responsibility to fulfill the needs of the country's capital," the petition stated.

Political disputes over water supply

Political disputes over water supply between authorities have surfaced as water shortages mounted. On May 31, the AAP government petitioned the Supreme Court, requesting a direction to the Haryana government to release surplus water supplied by Himachal Pradesh to the national capital. The Delhi government's appeal called for immediate addressing of its water crisis exacerbated by intense heatwave conditions.

On the other hand, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini denounced the Delhi government's allegations that his state was not adequately supplying the city's share of water. On Sunday, he asserted that his administration supplies water to the national capital over and above the agreed-upon quantity. Furthermore, BJP leader Nayab Singh Saini urged the Delhi government to pay attention to resource distribution and proper management.

When questioned about the AAP government's allegations, Nayab Singh Saini stated, "(Arvind) Kejriwal is misleading people. Earlier too, he raised this issue. They want to hide their own shortcomings," reported PTI.

SC to hear AAP's plea

The Supreme Court is slated to hear the AAP's plea on June 3, demanding immediate additional water from neighboring Haryana. On May 30, the Delhi government announced that a central control room would be established to monitor water supply across the national capital amid the ongoing water crisis. Moreover, Delhi residents can call '1916' to request water tankers, as announced by Delhi Water Minister Atishi.
