After the Uttar Pradesh government, Uttarakhand authorities have also mandated the shop owners to display their names along the Kanwar yatra route. The directions from the state government have come with an aim to prevent any law and order issues during one of the important yantras of the Hindu religion.

While encouraging the directive, the chief minister of Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami cited the past instances of fake names used by the shop owners. While speaking to ANI, the Haridwar SSP Padmendra Dobal said, "Regarding the preparations for Kanwar, we have given general instructions to the hotels, dhabas, restaurants and hawkers on the Kanwar route that they will write the name of the owner on their shops and if they fail to do so, we will take legal action against them... Many times, a situation of dispute arises due to this, hence this decision has been taken by us."

According to the sources, the decision was implemented after a meeting on July 12. While speaking on the decision, the chief minister of the state reiterated that the arrangements have been made to ease the devotees during the yatra. “This decision is not to harm or target anyone. This order has been taken to maintain law and order,” he said.

It is important to note that the decision by the Uttar Pradesh government to enforce the display of names on the shops en route to Kanwar Yatra and drawn sharp criticism from the opposition parties, who have accused the government of isolating one community.

The Kanwar Yatra, a sacred pilgrimage of devotees of Lord Shiva, is scheduled to begin on July 22.
