In a swift action, the United States has organized an emergency visa interview for the father of Indian student Neelam Shinde, who is currently in a coma as a result of an accident in California. At 9 AM on Friday, the interview will take place at the U.S. Consulate in Mumbai, from where he might be able to fly to the U.S. for an extended visit with his daughter.
While speaking to a media outlet, Shinde's father has confirmed the appointment and said he was hopeful of receiving the visa soon. "After requesting help from many sources, only then did we receive a call from the embassy for the interview. Let us hope that a visa is issued," he added, going on to explain that travel arrangements were being made for Thursday night from Satara, Maharashtra.
The Ministry of External Affairs of India pushed the American administration to respond immediately in granting a visa to Shinde's family. As per reports reaching this desk, the MEA requested the U.S. authorities and, subsequent to that request, has been moving rapidly to ensure the visa is granted without delay.
Neelam Shinde, a native of Satara, Maharashtra, suffered severe injuries in a road accident on February 14 in California. She had critical injuries to her head, arms, and chest, which caused her to fall into a coma after she was taken to the hospital.
While the family is being hit hard by this traumatic experience, it has been screaming for urgent support to accompany their daughter during this most trying time. A number of opposition leaders have also urged the central government to help facilitate the family of Shinde in obtaining the required travel permits.
