New Delhi: In a shocking incident, 12 people, including five children, were injured after a pack of jackals attacked two villages in Pilibhit district, Uttar Pradesh. The attacks occurred in the villages of Suswar and Pansoli, where jackals first targeted children playing outside their homes. When elderly villagers attempted to intervene, they too were attacked. All 12 victims were rushed to the Jahanabad Community Health Centre (CHC) for treatment.
Following the attacks, local residents, angered by the brutal assault, managed to kill one of the jackals. Upon receiving news of the incident, officials from the local administration and the forest department arrived at the scene to begin an investigation. Authorities are looking into what triggered the sudden aggression of the animals.
This incident comes at a time when wolf attacks in the neighboring Bahraich district have claimed the lives of 10 people, including several children. In addition, 36 people have been injured in these attacks, creating fear and unrest among the local population. The wolf attacks have heightened concerns across the region, as both Pilibhit and Bahraich deal with increasing threats from wild animals.
Pilibhit's District Forest Officer (DFO), Manish Singh, confirmed that the attacks were indeed carried out by jackals, not wolves, as some villagers initially believed. Singh attributed the jackals’ aggressive behavior to heavy rains that have flooded their natural habitats, forcing them out of hiding. He also mentioned that the jackals' mating season could be a contributing factor to their increased aggression.
Pilibhit's Member of Parliament (MP), Jitin Prasada, contacted local villagers to express his concern over the attacks. He reassured the locals that authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further incidents.
