Rambhav Gattu, a chief manufacturing officer at Adani Group-backed Ambuja Cement, was arrested in Chhattisgarh for allegedly attempting to bribe a government official in Odisha. According to the vigilance directorate in Odisha, Gattu offered a bouquet and a packet of sweets, which was later discovered to contain 200,000 Indian rupees ($2,382) in cash, to the collector of Barghar district.

Details of the bribery attempt

The incident came to light on Wednesday, with the vigilance directorate stating that Gattu’s attempt to influence the public servant was aimed at achieving unspecified objectives. A formal case has been filed against Gattu for "attempting to induce a public servant," though the specifics of what the money was intended to secure have not been disclosed. The accused has been arrested and taken to court, with investigations currently ongoing.

Responses and reactions

Neither Ambuja Cements nor the Adani Group has responded to requests for comment regarding the arrest. Additionally, attempts to contact Gattu or his representatives were unsuccessful.

Government's anti-corruption stance

This arrest comes amidst Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s broader anti-corruption efforts. Modi has emphasized combating corruption as a priority for his administration, stating in July that he had granted central agencies a "free hand" to pursue those involved in corrupt practices.
