Amid the political outcry over Tamil Nadu Udhayanidhi Stalin‘s rant against Sanatan Dharma, actor-turned-politician and the chief of Makkal Needhi Maiam, Kamal Haasan on Friday while referring Udhayanidhi, said that “a young kid is being targeted just because he spoke about Sanatan.”
While speaking at an event during a party meet, Haasan further said that all of us got to know about the word ‘Sanatan’ because of Periyar.
“A young kid (Udhayanidhi Stalin) is being targeted just because he spoke about ‘Sanatan’. While referring his forefathers, the actor implied that several leaders of the Dravidian movement such as Udhayanidhi’s grandfather and late DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi have also spoken about it in the past. Periyar was the one who told us about Sanatan,” he said.
“Periyar once used to work in the temple. He was doing ‘puja’ in Varanasi with ’tilak’ on his forehead. Imagine how much anger he must have had to throw away all that and work in service of the people realising that it’s the biggest service. Till the end of his life he lived for society,” he added further
“Neither the DMK nor any other party can claim Periyar as their own. Tamil Nadu will celebrate Periyar as its own,” he added.
On September 2, while speaking at a public event, Udhayanidhi Stalin, the son of MK Stalin, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, called for the ‘eradication’ of Sanatan Dharma and compared it with diseases like dengue, malaria etc.
“Few things cannot be opposed, that should be abolished only. We can’t oppose Dengue, Mosquitoes, Malaria, or Corona, we have to eradicate this that’s how we have to eradicate Sanatan. Rather opposing Sanatan it should be eradicated,” Udhayanidhi quoted.
“The name Sanatan is from Sanskrit. It is against social justice and equality,” he added further.
Meanwhile, Supreme Court has issued notice to Tamil Nadu government and other ministers after ‘Sanatan Dharma’ row.
